Moving towards Pervasive BI
Remember the green-bar reports rattled off by Dot Matrix printers, which were the order of the day as recently as a decade ago? Or the Access-based reports created and analyzed by an exclusive group of specialized users? Thanks to the Internet and to the Web-centricity of good BI solutions, these days feel like an eternity ago. Today, BI no longer needs to be static, complex to use or confined to small groups of technically-minded personnel. And since Web 2.0 innovations are spilling over into BI, the two fields (Web technology and BI) are largely evolving as one.
Mashups and dashboards are not the only factors conducive to pervasive BI. But they are a good example of features that a broad base of BI consumers will use as a part of their daily business routine.
These developments represent great strides in the world of business intelligence. Features that consolidate and unify different data sources as well as ways to act on information—all in a familiar Web-based format—are ideal vehicles to deliver BI to the ‘masses’.
