Seven Tips for Planning your Data Warehouse Implementation

by Arshad Kahn
IT Professional, Independent Consultant, and Author
May 15, 2007

An unplanned data warehouse project is a blueprint for disaster. Before a data warehouse implementation starts, it should be preceded by detailed planning.

The planning phase must define the scope, specifications, as well as specific responsibilities for the client, vendor, and consulting partner(s). Scope creep is a major issue with data warehouse projects. Since the scope can easily get out of hand, either before or after it has been finalized, it must be controlled.

Data warehouse project scope can be managed by limiting the number of subjects to be implemented, number of departments to be included, number of data sources, data source quality, data warehouse size, number or types of users, analysis techniques, and platform to be implemented (existing or new).
